چکیده

CHABLIS (Chemistry of the Antarctic Boundary Layer and the Interface with Snow) was a collaborative UK research project aimed at probing the detailed chemistry of the Antarctic boundary layer and the exchange of trace gases at the snow surface. The centre-piece to CHABLIS was the measurement campaign, conducted at the British Antarctic Survey station, Halley, in coastal Antarctica, from January 2004 through to February 2005. The campaign measurements covered an extremely wide range of species allowing investigations to be carried out within the broad context of boundary layer chemistry. Here we present an overview of the CHABLIS campaign. We provide details of the measurement location and introduce the Clean Air Sector Laboratory (CASLab) where the majority of the instruments were housed. We describe the meteorological conditions experienced during the campaign and present supporting chemical data, both of which provide a context within which to view the campaign results. Finally we provide a brief sumCorrespondence to: A. E. Jones ([email protected]) mary of highlights from the measurement campaign. Unexpectedly high halogen concentrations profoundly affect the chemistry of many species at Halley throughout the sunlit months, with a secondary role played by emissions from the snowpack. This overarching role for halogens in coastal Antarctic boundary layer chemistry was completely unanticipated, and the results have led to a step-change in our thinking and understanding.

The multi-seasonal NOy budget in coastal Antarctica and its link with surface snow and ice core nitrate: results from the CHABLIS campaign

Measurements of a suite of individual NOy components were carried out at Halley station in coastal Antarctica as part of the CHABLIS campaign (Chemistry of the Antarctic Boundary Layer and the Interface with Snow). Conincident measurements cover over half a year, from austral winter 2004 through to austral summer 2005. Results show clear dominance of organic NOy compounds (PAN and MeONO2) durin...

Seasonal variation of peroxyacetylnitrate (PAN) in coastal Antarctica measured with a new instrument for the detection of sub-part per trillion mixing ratios of PAN

An automated gas chromatograph with sample pre-concentration for the measurement of peroxyacetylnitrate (PAN) was constructed with a minimum detection limit below 1 pptv. This instrument was deployed at the British Antarctic Survey’s Halley Research Station, Antarctica (75.6 S, 26.6 W) as part of the CHABLIS (Chemistry of the Antarctic Boundary Layer and the Interface with Snow) campaign. Dynamics of Love-Type Waves in Orthotropic Layer Under the Influence of Heterogeneity and Corrugation

The present problem deals with the propagation of Love-type surface waves in a bedded structure comprises of an inhomogeneous orthotropic layer and an elastic half-space. The upper boundary and the interface between two media are considered to be corrugated. An analytical method (separation of variables) is adapted to solve the second order PDEs, which governs the equations of motion. Equations...

Influence of the Imperfect Interface on Love-Type Mechanical Wave in a FGPM Layer

In this study, we consider the propagation of the Love-type wave in piezoelectric gradient covering layer on an elastic half-space having an imperfect interface between them. Dispersion relation has been obtained in the form of determinant for both electrically open and short cases. The effects of different material gradient coefficients of functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) and ...

An overview on Snow trout (Schizothorax zarudnyi) biology

The Snow trout, Schizothorax zarudnyi Nikolskii, 1897 belongs to Cyprinidae family, endemic to Hamoun Lake, Sistan, Iran. Female fish mature at 4 years old, a few at 3 years old, and male fish at 3 years old, and live in the rivers and lagoons of Hamoon (stagnant waters) and spawn in the same place. Natural fish populations have declined during the last several years because of environmental de...
